Some collaborations begin with a brief email. Others begin with a shared way of seeing the world.
When Nicole McNamara contacted us about creating a sofa for her family, the request was simple but meaningful: it had to be beautiful, comfortable, durable, natural — and aligned with the values that guide their life.
For the McNamara family, nature is not a backdrop. It is part of who they are.
Known around the world through HBO’s Emmy-nominated documentary series 100 Foot Wave, Garrett McNamara and his family have brought the power, beauty and fragility of the ocean into millions of homes. The series follows their extraordinary journey in Nazaré, Portugal, where some of the largest waves ever surfed rise from the Atlantic with breathtaking force.
But beyond the adrenaline and scale, 100 Foot Wave is also a story about courage, family, respect for nature and a life lived close to the elements.
That is where our worlds met.

A shared vision of natural living
At BioSofa, we have always believed that a sofa should be more than an object placed in a room. It should be part of a healthier home. A place where families rest, gather, recover, talk, dream and live.
Nicole and Garrett were looking for a sofa that could hold real family life — something generous, welcoming and strong — without compromising on materials.
No toxins. No unnecessary chemicals. No synthetic shortcuts.
Just natural comfort, made with care.
The sofa they chose
For the McNamara family, we created a custom Raffaella sofa, handmade in Italy using 100% natural materials.
Raffaella was a natural choice: soft, relaxed, elegant and deeply comfortable, with the generous presence of a sofa designed to be lived in. Every detail was made to suit their home and their rhythm of life — from the proportions to the textiles, from the comfort to the final finish.
As with every BioSofa, the piece was made to order in our workshop near Lake Como by skilled artisans, using materials chosen for comfort, durability and integrity.
Made for a family. Made with purpose.
What made this project special was not only the sofa itself, but the exchange behind it.
During the process, we spoke about materials, family life, sustainability, comfort and the importance of creating a home environment that feels safe and honest. The collaboration became more than a commission. It became a meeting of values.
For us, seeing a BioSofa become part of the McNamara family’s home — a family so deeply connected to the natural world — was a beautiful reminder of why we do what we do.
Because true comfort is not only about softness.
It is about trust.
It is about knowing what surrounds you.
It is about choosing pieces that respect your home, your family and the planet we all share.

A sofa with a story
The Raffaella created for the McNamaras is a symbol of what BioSofa stands for: Italian craftsmanship, natural materials, personal design and a slower, more thoughtful way of living.
Just like the ocean, a home has its own rhythm. And the pieces we bring into it should support that rhythm with beauty, honesty and care.
We are proud to have been part of this story.
And we are honoured that our sofa now belongs to theirs.
