Wich Animal Products Are The Most Used In The Furntirue Industry?
The most common animal products used in the furniture business are goose down, leather and wool. These products are biodegradable and can be recycled making them eco friendly choices, the use of these materials is in fact more sustainable than it’s plastic replacements. What poses concern is the standard of animal welfare in the production of these high end products.
Why Is These Animals Welfare Not Being Respected And How?
An ongoing demand for goose down feathers, wool and leather are the reason why many factories moved their prodcution to countires where there is very few, or none, animal welfare laws. Some companies have been exposed for their brutal and unfair practices on sheep, geese and cows.
A common practice in Australia, which is one of the main global wool producers, is mulesing a practice in which chunks of flesh are cut off lambs to prevent flystrike and prevent loss for the company. Also the tail gets cut for a cleaner final product and means less work for the big companies.
Scientists proved that goose down feathers can be removed from live geese without hurting the animal, if the removed feathers are “ripe”. Many companies to enhance their profits and sustain the demanding industry pluck young feathers because of their higher quality but also tearing geese’s skin off.
The abusive treatment of animals for leather is widespread. PETA has documented cruelt practices, including animals being tortured. Ultimately, they are slaughtered young, often experiencing severe cruelty, including being skinned while still conscious.
